About the role
In this role, you will lead an engineering team across one of Canonical's core Ubuntu departments (Foundations, Server, Desktop, or Debcrafters). You will stay technically hands-on while managing delivery, facilitating technical architecture, and coaching engineers. Responsibilities include defining technical roadmaps in collaboration with product managers, authoring performant code in modern languages like Go, Rust, or Python, and actively contributing to upstream open source communities.
What you'll do
- Lead, coach, and mentor a distributed team of engineers delivering Ubuntu technologies.
- Design, build, and ship performant software in Rust, Go, Python, or C/C++.
- Drive planning, estimation, execution, and architecture reviews across Ubuntu workstreams.
- Partner with product management to define vision, roadmaps, and technical strategy.
- Engage with upstream open source communities and improve technical documentation.
What you bring
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM, or equivalent background with a strong academic track record.
- Demonstrated technical leadership experience managing or guiding software engineers.
- Significant software development experience in Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, or C/C++.
- Passion for open source software, Linux distributions, and system-level engineering.
- Ability to travel internationally up to twice a year for team sprints lasting up to two weeks.
