About the role
As a Technical Author at Canonical, you will lead documentation efforts across product engineering, customer support, or business operations. You will combine technical communication with subject-matter expertise, employing the Diátaxis approach to establish high documentation standards. Working closely with engineering teams and open-source communities, you will craft user-facing and internal documentation while treating documentation practice as a first-class engineering discipline.
What you'll do
- Create, maintain, and improve software documentation and internal materials using the Diátaxis framework
- Work collaboratively with engineering and business teams to enable effective documentation contributions
- Engage with user and open-source communities to align documentation with audience needs
- Standardise the structure, presentation, and style of technical content across products
- Influence product development and design from the perspective of an expert user
What you bring
- BSc/BA degree or equivalent practical experience
- Demonstrable documentation skills and a programmer's mindset toward technical writing
- Familiarity with Linux, the command line, Git, Sphinx, and reStructuredText
- Experience working in software development contexts and engaging with open-source communities
- Ability to travel twice a year for up to two weeks for in-person company sprints
