About the role
Canonical is seeking a Software Engineering Director to oversee multiple engineering teams, managers, and staff engineers building major open-source products. In this role, you will set strategic direction, enforce rigorous software quality and testing benchmarks, cultivate engineering management talent, and align multi-team delivery across distributed time zones while maintaining hands-on technical understanding.
What you'll do
- Lead multiple engineering teams ranging from graduate to senior levels and mentor engineering managers.
- Hire staff-level engineers across domains such as performance, security, and quality assurance.
- Define, implement, and defend disciplined software engineering processes and quality standards.
- Represent your product line to executive stakeholders, enterprise partners, and open-source communities.
- Collaborate across leadership to manage dependencies and drive strategic engineering initiatives.
What you bring
- Extensive engineering management experience managing managers and technical leaders.
- Outstanding Linux-based software engineering track record across relevant systems or languages.
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling equivalent background.
- Strong verbal and written English communication skills with experience in public presentations.
- Willingness to travel globally twice per year for company events lasting up to two weeks.
