About the role
As a Sustaining Software Engineer, you will tackle critical issues in the open-source software stack ranging from bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), and storage (Ceph) up to OpenStack, Kubernetes, and Ubuntu itself. You will work across multiple programming languages to investigate complex customer problems, backport patches, and collaborate directly with upstream communities to release fixes.
What you'll do
- Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Linux kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and other open-source software.
- Develop bug fixes, backport patches, and coordinate with upstream open-source communities for patch inclusion.
- Collaborate closely with Canonical's field, support, and product engineering teams.
- Review technical code submitted by other engineers and participate in engineering process improvements.
- Travel internationally up to 10% of your time for team sprints, internal events, and conferences.
What you bring
- Professional software engineering experience with a degree in Computer Science, STEM, or equivalent background.
- Strong experience with Linux and related cloud technologies such as Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes.
- Solid development-level programming experience in Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux.
- Hands-on proficiency with debugging tools such as gdb and source control systems like Git.
- Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for company sprints and team meetings.
