About the role
This role is a general engineering track for Senior+ engineers across Canonical. You will drive the architecture, design, and evolution of high-impact open-source software spanning core Ubuntu systems, cloud automation, distributed systems, and edge infrastructure. Alongside writing high-quality code and delivering crisp documentation, you will partner with engineering leadership to provide technical direction and mentor distributed team members.
What you'll do
- Lead the design, architecture, and implementation of impactful open-source projects
- Write high-quality, performant code in Golang, Rust, Python, C/C++, or TypeScript/React
- Collaborate proactively and asynchronously across a globally distributed team
- Provide technical leadership, code reviews, and mentorship to colleagues
- Debug complex issues and contribute to world-class technical documentation
- Participate in company-wide engineering sprints and international events twice per year
What you bring
- Exceptional academic track record with a degree in Computer Science/STEM (or compelling equivalent narrative)
- Deep professional experience with at least one core language: Go, Rust, Python, or C
- Demonstrated track record of technical leadership, architectural design, and driving team pace
- Conscientiousness, detail orientation, and a strong focus on software performance and quality
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally twice a year for team events (up to two weeks each)
