About the role
In this role, you will lead the adoption of Rust across Canonical's offerings—from firmware, bootloaders, and kernel layers up to desktop software. You will design and implement well-tested, documented Rust software on Linux, participate in architectural and code reviews, debug issues, and ensure Ubuntu remains the premier platform for Rust development worldwide.
What you'll do
- Design and implement well-tested and well-documented software in Rust on Linux
- Advocate for Rust adoption across Canonical and upstream open-source projects
- Identify existing codebases and projects that should be prioritized for Rust adoption
- Participate in engineering reviews for code quality and software architecture
- Collaborate with community members and colleagues on technical specifications
- Debug and fix issues encountered by users and operate services where needed
What you bring
- Experience designing and writing high-quality Rust software on Linux systems
- Deep experience with and passion for Linux at the system level
- Undergraduate degree in CS or STEM, or a compelling narrative about an alternative path
- Strong track record in high school and university academics
- Professional written and spoken English communication skills
- Ability to travel internationally up to twice a year for team events of up to two weeks each
