About the role
This role is part of a general selection track for engineers focused on back-end REST API microservices in Go and Python, covering all levels of seniority. You will design, scale, and maintain critical services supporting millions of Ubuntu clients and cloud infrastructure worldwide. The position involves advancing Canonical's engineering practices around API design, database performance, resilience, multi-region delivery, and DevOps.
What you'll do
- Write high-quality, robust, and well-designed backend software at scale in Python or Go
- Design APIs, software architectures, and participate in peer code reviews
- Build and maintain reliable, fault-tolerant distributed web services
- Write comprehensive automated tests and debug complex production issues
- Collaborate proactively across distributed teams and participate in biannual company sprints
What you bring
- Proficiency in Python and/or Go
- Demonstrated experience with scalable web services and relational or non-relational databases
- Experience with Linux environments, preferably Ubuntu or Debian
- Familiarity with continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines
- Strong communication skills in professional written and spoken English
- Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks each
