About the role
In this role, you will take the lead in driving technical direction for the Ubuntu Linux kernel, including partner engagements for silicon and cloud platforms, CVE mitigations, kernel hardening, performance enhancements, and scalable distribution packaging. While not a formal managerial position, you will mentor and guide junior and mid-career engineers, coordinate with external delivery teams, and collaborate with technical leadership to maintain Ubuntu's high standards of quality and reliability.
What you'll do
- Set technical direction and lead delivery for a team of junior and mid-career engineers working on key aspects of Ubuntu Linux.
- Work closely with management inside and outside the team to track and coordinate technical initiatives to completion.
- Collaborate daily with other senior technical leadership across the Kernel Team.
- Drive engagements with key silicon and cloud partners to deliver optimal platform solutions.
- Architect kernel performance, correctness, and security hardening improvements while streamlining packaging workflows.
What you bring
- Demonstrated technical equivalent of 15+ years of industry experience.
- Expert understanding of the C programming language and proficiency with Python and Bash scripting.
- Demonstrated expertise working with a *nix-based operating system kernel and distribution.
- Deep understanding of the git version control system and software packaging formats.
- Ability to travel internationally at least twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.
