About the role
Every year Canonical selects new junior professionals into the Canonical Kernel Team to work on the Linux kernel for Ubuntu. In this role, you will work closely with senior mentors and external silicon, cloud, and hardware manufacturer teams to deliver, secure, and optimize kernel flavors across diverse architectures ranging from Raspberry Pi and embedded systems to enterprise cloud platforms. This is a full-time remote position aimed at recent graduates or early-career engineers passionate about operating systems.
What you'll do
- Collaborate regularly and proactively with a globally distributed kernel engineering team
- Submit, review, and apply kernel patches while working with internal and upstream maintainers
- Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by customers, the community, or automated testing
- Work with external silicon, cloud, and hardware manufacturer delivery teams on bleeding-edge platforms
- Improve tooling and automation for testing and delivering various Ubuntu Linux kernel flavors
What you bring
- Programming experience in C and/or Rust
- Solid understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals
- Familiarity with version control practices, ideally Git
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal
- Ability and willingness to travel globally twice a year for engineering sprints of up to two weeks
