About the role
As a Kernel Engineering Manager, you will oversee engineers building, maintaining, and optimizing the Linux kernel powering Ubuntu across cloud, server, desktop, and IoT environments. This role is designed for senior individual contributors or technical leads looking to step into people and project management without requiring prior formal management experience. You will collaborate with major cloud providers and silicon vendors while driving engineering excellence, managing release cycles, and fostering a culture of mentorship and open-source collaboration.
What you'll do
- Transition into full-time people and project management leading a globally distributed team of Linux kernel engineers.
- Manage the delivery, testing, maintenance, and release cycles of Ubuntu kernels across multiple platforms.
- Drive engineering standards for code quality, security, and performance across kernel portfolios.
- Collaborate with silicon vendors, cloud partners, and internal Canonical teams to enable new hardware features.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning, feedback, accountability, and open-source contribution.
What you bring
- Proven experience as a Senior Software Engineer, Tech Lead, or similar with strong technical leadership skills.
- Solid technical foundation in systems software, C programming, or operating systems concepts.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, guide technical projects, and drive architectural decisions.
- Professional written and spoken English communication skills.
- Ability to travel internationally twice per year for up to two weeks for company events.
