About the role
This role is a general track for first-level engineering management positions across Canonical's diverse software domains, including systems, web, cloud, data infrastructure, and security. Engineering Managers at Canonical are trusted technologists who lead from the front, contributing code and code reviews while guiding team strategy, habits, and delivery standards. You will line-manage software engineers ranging from graduate to senior levels, coach them through career milestones, and partner closely with senior engineers and stakeholders to ensure seamless product development.
What you'll do
- Lead, mentor, and offer career development feedback to a team of engineers ranging from graduate to senior
- Identify, monitor, and measure team health indicators while implementing disciplined engineering processes
- Contribute code, review patches and design specifications, and maintain high standards of code quality
- Represent your team and product to stakeholders, partners, and the broader open-source community
- Plan, track, and manage delivery progress against agreed roadmaps, goals, and release schedules
- Collaborate across leadership to evangelize organizational practices and drive continuous improvement
What you bring
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about an alternative path
- Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university
- Demonstrated experience leading, coaching, and mentoring software developers in an agile environment
- Advanced technical expertise in your domain (e.g., Python/Go, C/C++/Rust, Web, Linux Kernel, or Cloud)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
- Ability to travel internationally twice a year for team sprint events lasting up to two weeks each
