About the role
As a Community Engineer, you will facilitate and scale community initiatives across the Ubuntu and wider Linux ecosystem. You will work closely with volunteer developers, internal engineering teams, developer relations, and marketing to smooth processes, encourage new technical projects, and create content that engages open source contributors. The position involves facilitating technical contributions, representing Canonical and Ubuntu at events and conferences, and ensuring the sustainability of community-led tools and projects.
What you'll do
- Engage with the Ubuntu community via Discourse, Matrix, social media, and open source forums.
- Write high-quality technical content, blog posts, and documentation supporting community initiatives.
- Facilitate and support technical projects created by volunteer developers.
- Represent Ubuntu and Canonical through speaking engagements at international conferences and expos.
- Coordinate community plans with internal Canonical engineering, product, and developer relations teams.
- Travel 2 to 4 weeks per year for internal sprints and external open source events.
What you bring
- Demonstrated experience working with open source communities and volunteer contributor workflows.
- A public track record of accomplishments such as GitHub contributions, technical talks, or blog posts.
- Familiarity with Ubuntu Linux, software development, DevOps, package management, or container technologies.
- Experience in technical program management with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Self-motivated ability to work autonomously and take ownership in a fast-paced remote environment.
