About the role
As a Backend Engineer on the Chat Engine team, you will focus on developing the conversational AI runtime behind GitLab Duo Chat. Your work will center on building and maintaining agentic flows with Python and LangGraph, connecting capabilities via the Flow Registry and Duo Workflow Service, and integrating them into GitLab's Rails monolith and GraphQL APIs alongside senior and staff engineers.
What you'll do
- Develop secure, well-tested, and performant backend features and improvements for GitLab Duo Chat.
- Implement and extend agentic workflows in Python using LangGraph, Duo Workflow Service, and Flow Registry.
- Integrate Chat capabilities into the GitLab Rails monolith, including its GraphQL API.
- Write maintainable code meeting high-scale standards with comprehensive tests on every merge request.
- Review community and internal code contributions in accordance with GitLab Code Review Guidelines.
- Participate in Tier 2 or Tier 3 weekday, weekend, and occasional night on-call rotations.
What you bring
- Professional software development experience building and testing production services in Python.
- Working proficiency with Ruby on Rails, or a strong willingness to learn it.
- Exposure to or strong interest in LLM application development, including tool/function calling and prompt evaluation.
- Experience designing, building, and optimizing performance for APIs.
- Solid understanding of secure coding practices and experience working in an asynchronous, remote engineering culture.
- Experience with LangGraph, LangChain, or comparable agent orchestration frameworks is preferred.
